The question in the title is one that HVAC professionals often hear from customers. From the point of view of a homeowner who knows a little bit about the air conditioning system—mainly that it uses a chemical blend call refrigerant in order to operate—the question makes some sense. After all, won’t the AC eventually run out of its refrigerant?

However, this is a common misunderstanding about what refrigerant is and what it does. There may be times when an AC needs a refrigerant “refill” (it’s actually called “recharging”), but it’s 1) a repair, not routine maintenance job; and 2) something only professionals can do. (more…)
