It’s October! This Is a Great Time for a New AC

air-conditioning-condensersThe arrival of fall means some cooling down for us in Corpus Christi, but we never get full and total relief from warm days, even in the middle of the winter. You may not need to use your home’s air conditioning system as much over the next couple of months, but that’s a good reason to use the time to ensure that it’s ready to get to work at its best the next time you need it—because that next time could be right around the corner.

Keeping up with air conditioning repairs is the main way to keep your AC in good shape at this time of year (you’ll want to arrange for maintenance in spring to get the system properly tuned up for the intense heat of summer). However, if you have an older central air conditioner and you think that it’s coming to the end of its service life, fall is an excellent season to have a new system put in.

Let’s take a close look at fall air conditioning replacement in Corpus Christi, TX.

Is the air conditioner ready to be retired?

This is a big question, since you don’t want to replace an air conditioning system that still has a few more years of efficient and reliable performance left in it. The best measuring stick is the age of the unit: a standard central air conditioner can last from 10 to 15 years before it begins to suffer from inevitable mechanical decline. We recommend replacing the air conditioner if it’s more than 15 years old. If it’s still under its warranty, it’s probably better to have it repaired.

But with repairs you still need to make sure you aren’t paying too much. How much is “too much”? No single repair should be half the cost of a replacement. Nor should you spend in excess of $500 a year in repairs to keep the air conditioner functioning.

If the air conditioner costs far more to run than it used to, first see if repairs will fix the problem. If the repairs are too costly (see above) or your technicians recommend a replacement, go ahead with the replacement.

What type of air conditioner should you have installed?

Let’s say you’ve made the choice to replace your cooling system. You have some options to consider for the replacement. There are new, high-efficiency ACs with variable-speed fans and multi-stage compressors. These units not only cut down on energy costs, they can help with more even cooling distribution. You may also want to consider a heat pump, which is an air conditioner that can switch direction to also function as a heating system. This is a great choice if you have a central heater that you also think needs to be replaced.

Finally, you might think about going with a ductless air conditioning system. These are helpful for renovations, something on a lot of people’s minds after the recent hurricane damage. Removing ducts from your home for a ductless system may be the change you need.
