Is It Possible to Install Ductless Heating Myself?

Monday, January 2nd, 2017

There’s a law of the Internet: “If it’s something you want to do yourself, the Internet will tell you how to do it.” But this law should be changed to, “If it’s something you want to do yourself, the Internet will try to tell you how to do it.”

No matter how many “How To” videos you watch on certain subjects, you still won’t be able to handle them yourself unless you have proper training. “How to varnish your own table” video—that might work. “How to repair a low-earth orbit satellite” video—probably not.

A ductless heating and cooling system isn’t as complex as satellites, but it still falls into the category of “things the Internet can’t really teach you to do.” It’s true that putting in ductless mini splits is a simpler installation job than putting in a central heating and cooling system. But it still requires professionals for a number of reasons.

Proper sizing

Any new heating and cooling system for a house must be matched to the homes specific comfort requirements. A system that’s oversized will waste power as it cycles on and off rapidly; a system that’s undersized won’t deliver the right heating and cooling. With a ductless system comes the specific concern about how many mini splits to use indoors, and how many and what power of outdoor unit to use. This takes experienced professionals to determine accurately.

Air handler mounting

The small indoor air handlers can’t just be mounted up on a few nails like a framed picture. They must have special mounting frames secured first so they won’t rip off the walls. A hole must be bored through the wall behind each one to allow for the condensate, refrigerant, and power line to pass through. This work is something to leave to professionals—otherwise too much can go wrong.

This is only the start of the reasons to leave ductless heating and cooling installation to the experts. But experts are easy to find in Corpus Christi, TX: simply contact Justice Air Conditioning & Heating.

The Winter Prep Debate: What Type of Heater to Install

Now that the fall has officially arrived, it’s the season for homeowners to take stock of their heating systems and decide if they need to install a new one before the cold weather hits. How Does a Ductless Mini Split Heat Your Home?

It can seem confusing: a system that doesn’t have ducts, and also offers heating and cooling. The truth is, it’s not that confusing at all. However, if you are looking to install ductless heating in Port Aransas, it is important to get professional help. Heat pumps are complex devices and require specific training and expertise to ensure a proper installation.  At Justice Air Conditioning & Heating, our technicians are certified and trained, and can help with any heat pump installation or repair needed, so call us today.

How Does Ductless Heat?

There are two main components to a ductless system: the outdoor unit and the indoor blowers. The outdoor uses heat pump technology, and is connected to the indoor blowers (up to 4 per outdoor unit) via a conduit through an exterior wall. The way the system is able to provide both heating and cooling is due to the reversing valve in the heat pump: this valve reverses the flow of refrigerant, so the device can both heat and cool. All that is required is that the mode is switched from cooling to heating.

The conduit between the outdoor unit and the indoor blowers has a power cord, condensate drain and refrigerant line. When an indoor blower is turned on, it begins the heating or cooling cycle, and soon air will blow from the indoor blower.

What Are the Benefits of a Ductless System?

As we’ve already discussed, one of the biggest advantages of installing a ductless mini-split is that the system can both heat and cool your home. Here are some other benefits to consider:

  • Easy installation – because there is no need for ductwork, the installation of a ductless system is simple and straightforward. The indoor blowers can be mounted flush against walls or hung from ceilings, a small 3” hole is drilled into an exterior wall, and the indoor unit is connected to the outdoor unit via the conduit.
  • Customized comfort – each blower operates independently, allowing you to set a different temperature per blower, or even keep heating off in an unused area.
  • Energy efficiency – not only is the system itself very energy efficient – it uses only a small amount of electricity to operate – but the ability to customize your comfort also helps to reduce energy usage.

If you want a system that offers both heating and cooling and energy efficiency, ductless heating in Port Aransas may be the perfect fit for you.
